The Professor's Response

Hi professor
For the small, independent samples with unequal variances, (welch-satterthwaite method), if the n's are the same, is it ok to use the formula: (n1+n2-2) for the degrees of freedom?

Thank you

Professor McGukian

Hi Shirley,

Yes, as long as the sample sizes are same you can use the shortcut of n1 + n2 -2 for the degrees of freedom.

If that occurs on the exam, you will use the shortcut whenever the sample sizes are the same.

Sincerely,

Professor McGuckian
